What causes a clutch fan to engage? I put one back in the Runner and when I first started it, you could actually hear the fan. After a couple of seconds it disenaged and you couldn't hear it anymore. The tempo got plenty hot, actually above operating temp and it still did not come back on. If you rev it up it doesnt seem to spin any faster then when at idle.

Heat from the radiator is what locks it up, not sure if you have a fan shroud on it but that helps funnel the hot air to lock up the fan. Put card board in front of the radiator and let the thing get pretty warm, grab a bunch of rags and try to stop the fan, if you can stop it then it's not locking up. There is a small coiled spring on the front of the clutch, that is what heats up and locks up the clutch.

Put a new one in my tow rig tonight, was not locking up properly when climbing hills and temp was climbing to high for my liking. Works good now!

"grab a bunch of rags and see if you can stop it"! I must be missing something. While it's running?! It sounds like it would cut your hands off.
Glad you guys got new fans. Hope the trip goes well for everyone.
