Im trying to figure out what gears i have in my 88 4runner i looked at previous post about how to tell from the identifaction tag in the door jam but mine is totally different. I wanna figure it out without having to tear apart my front and rear end!

One way is to pull the driveline and see if there is a color on the pinion. There is a chart, if you have a color I will find the chart.

I'll have to do that! thank you so much i really did not want to have to tear into the front or rear end. but for some reason ive had to replace the 3rd member in my runner 3 times now because the ring gear keeps getting stripped out. It'll be perfect in 4wd then all of a sudden ALL the teeth are gone it seems. im not sure what it could be. my first thought was maybe the guy that had it before me put a new front end in it and had different gears and the back was pushing the front end when it was in 4wd we replaced it but put a 3rd member off of a 4cylender on it the ring gear lasted 5 months and now it is completely stripped out(pinion is fine) I now realize why the one we put in it stripped out but im still not sure why i keep going through only the ring gear.. any ideas?
